18" TALL CHALK STATUE JACKIE COOGAN CHILD STAR 1920'S 18" TALL CHALK STATUE JACKIE COOGAN CHILD STAR 1920'S Silent movie child star Jackie Coogan was born John Leslie Coogan Jr. on October 26th, 1914 in Los Angeles, California. At age five he began touring with his family in vaudeville shows. His major break came in making Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" (1921), a memorable film in which the Little Tramp rescues and raises a street urchin named Jackie, eventually losing him. When he came of age he naturally wanted the money which he had earned making films as a child star, but his mother and his step-father refused his request. Jackie filed suit against them for the four million dollars that he had earned during those years. Under California Law at the time he had no rights to the money he made as a child, and he was eventually awarded only 6,000 in 1939! The public was outraged when they learned of the situation, and the California Legislature was pressured to pass the "Coogan Act", which would set up a trust fund for any child actor to protect his earnings. Almost broke by the 1960's, he suddenly hit his stride again, starring in the classic "The Addams Family", which ran from 1964-1966, in which he played funny, bald-headed Uncle Fester. Jackie Coogan continued making acting appearances until his death March 1st, 1984. This large statue shows Jackie in his in his role in My Boy, a 1921 film in which an orphan escapes immigration officials at Ellis Island and goes to live with an old ship's master who can't find work and can't pay the rent. On the base of the figure it says "JACKIE COOGAN, KID". He is made of chalk or plaster of Paris or some similar composition. He is wearing his customary pants with suspenders and "newsboy" cap. It is signed on the back of the base but I can't quite read what it says. He is in quite good condition for a chap almost 90 years old with only a few small chips. T seems to be paint loss as his slacks seem to have been blue but much of that is faded in the front. His face is in excellent condition. He weighs 4 pounds, 5 ounces. His major flaw is that he has had some chipping loss of paint. He has been propped up at an angle so he wouldn't fall but has made a crease on the back of his head. He will be shipped without the display case.
