Description
These charming Spanish dolls come from an estate collection that spans four generations. There are two men. The matador is dressed in aqua and pale yellow satin, decorated elaborately with sequins, and wearing his classic black wool hat. The picador has a red satin suit and sword, and is doffing his hat to the crowd. Both have hand-drawn faces on ceramic heads and remarkable details. A skilled craftsman must have made these dolls.
The dolls have been carefully stored for many years. They may have minor damage consistent with age as shown in photos. The matador has some loss to hair on the back of the head. Please review all photos as an important part of the description.
Here is some information on the provenance of the collection which may help with the age and source of the dolls. Great grandmother "Noni" was born in Scotland in the 1860's, attended the University of California at Berkeley in the 1880's, went to Europe to study for a time, and then married and returned to Princeton, New Jersey. Her sister and brother were both missionaries in China and India, and when Noni visited them she brought back souvenir dolls. Others in the family also traveled and brought back dolls, so there is a wide variety of unusual dolls in the collection. Noni died in 1953, so we expect all dolls date prior to the early 1950's, and some are much older. The dolls were finally inherited by the great granddaughter who was born in 1947, and are offered now for your consideration.
