Description
This beautiful pair of dolls comes from an estate collection that spans four generations. This pair of corn husk dolls represents a man and woman carrying a heavy load. Both are artfully made with amazing detail and bright colors of blue and pink. The woman is wearing a traditional long blouse or huipil, with the faint marking "Luz" on the front. This may be her name. The man has long white pants and a shirt. The faces are hand drawn. On the back is a faint mark "MEXICO" and a cord which can be used to hang the pair as an ornament. They are about 6" tall.
These dolls have been carefully stored for many years. They may have minor damage consistent with age as shown in photos. Please review all photos as an important part of the description.
Here is some information on the provenance of the collection which may help with the age and source of the dolls. Great grandmother "Noni" was born in Scotland in the 1860's, attended the University of California at Berkeley in the 1880's, went to Europe to study for a time, and then married and returned to Princeton, New Jersey. Her sister and brother were both missionaries in China and India, and when Noni visited them she brought back souvenir dolls. Others in the family also traveled and brought back dolls, so there is a wide variety of unusual dolls in the collection. Noni died in 1953, so we expect all dolls date prior to the early 1950's, and some are much older. The dolls were finally inherited by the great granddaughter who was born in 1947, and are offered now for your consideration.
